Twixmas Treasures at Charlestown’s Tunnel of Lights

Bored of board games over Christmas? Europe’s longest underground tunnel of festive lights at the Shipwreck Treasure Museum, in Charlestown, will be welcoming visitors throughout the ‘Twixmas’ period (Friday 27th – Monday 30th December) for a fun and festive activity!

It’s the first year the illuminated, subterranean passageways have been open to the public and they have proved a huge success with seasonal explorers of all ages.

The tunnels played a vital role in the early 20th Century china clay industry and the walls remain coated in the historic white clay today.

Director here at the Shipwreck Treasure Museum, Alex Smit, said: “It’s been wonderful to see so many families enjoying the festive tunnels and we’ve had some really positive feedback.’

“The tunnels will be open throughout the Twixmas period for people and provide a great added attraction as part of a brisk December walk on Charlestown’s beach, plus dogs are welcome too,” he added.

Located in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Charlestown, the Shipwreck Treasure Museum is home to one of Europe’s largest collections of shipwreck treasures with over 8,000 artefacts in their collection, including the only intact barrel of coins ever recovered from the seabed.

Tickets to enter the tunnels can be purchased at the admissions desk upon arrival and are £6.00 for adults and £3.00 children and under 5’s go free.

Here are our Christmas opening hours for the tunnels: Open Christmas Eve, closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day, open Friday 27th until Monday 30th December, closed New Year’s Eve, open Wednesday 1st to Sunday 5th January.
